We are incredibly proud to announce that Sport For Confidence, in partnership with Basildon Sporting Village (BSV), has won national recognition for the work we deliver, getting more people, more active more often, winning the Inclusion and Disability award at ukactive’s inaugural Awards.
Speaking about the win, Lyndsey Barrett, Occupational Therapist and Founder of Sport For Confidence, says: “We have come on an incredible journey to get to this point. Just three years ago, Sport For Confidence was hosting a small group of participants at Basildon Sporting Village. Today, thanks to the support of Everyone Active, the leisure management company responsible for operating BSV, our programme is available in multiple leisure facilities and delivers 1,000 interventions every month to individuals with a range of special abilities from autism to dementia and from Down’s Syndrome to learning disabilities.”
The black-tie awards dinner formed part of a four-day festival of physical activity at Manchester Central and attracted more than 800 guests to celebrate a vast range of organisations and individuals. An evolution of the traditional Flame Awards, the 2018 format saw the introduction of an array of new categories, all recognising the fantastic work taking place across the UK to encourage more people to lead an active lifestyle.
Each of the award finalists underwent a rigorous independent assessment process, designed to select the best in each category from hundreds of entrants.
Several stages of evaluation took place, including customer insight surveys, mystery calls, visits and a ‘Judges’ House’ assessment day at WeWork London.
Joining celebrity trainer and mentor, Professor Greg Whyte, on stage to host the event was ukactive Chair and Paralymic Champion, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, who comments: “The competition was particularly fierce this year and it was incredible to listen to the stories from our finalists – their passion for physical activity is clearly evident.”
ukactive CEO, Steven Ward, adds: “Given the growing contribution of physical activity in all aspects of society, it seemed only fitting that we expanded the ukactive Awards to recognise the full breadth of our movement to create an active nation.
“Huge congratulations to Sport For Confidence and Basildon Sporting Village who have been making such strides to get more people, more active, more often.”
