In support of the 2019 100 Day Challenge, Sport For Confidence has teamed up with Beyond Words to launch the ‘See and Stretch Book Club’, inviting teenage students from the Market Field School in Elmstead Market, Essex, to enjoy sharing picture books about important life experiences, enjoying physical activity and learning about back care.
The session was hosted by Leisure Word Colchester and welcomed special guest, Councillor Nick Cope, the newly appointed Mayor of Colchester.
“Our See and Stretch Book Club provides opportunities to develop lifelong skills enhancing a healthy lifestyle as well as increasing awareness and understanding of important issues in the world like being active, sport and exercise, diabetes, bullying, going to the doctors, being in hospital, bereavement and belonging,” explains Lyndee Oscar, Occupational Therapist at Sport For Confidence. “In addition, participants also enjoyed a range of low impact exercises and stretches delivered by a Sport For Confidence allied health professional and sports coach.
Initially the See and Stretch Book Club meets at Leisure Word Colchester once a week for a closed school group. The ambition is that, once well established, The Club will open to the general public, offering am opportunity for attendees to participate in a range of sporting activities.
Speaking about the launch, Nick Wright, Chief Executive at Beyond Words, says: “Many people find pictures easier to understand than words. Books Beyond Words encourage interaction and imagination through the presentation of pictures, supporting those who struggle with words. The See and Stretch Book Club provides participants with a stimulating, active environment in which to thrive.”
Sport For Confidence is a social enterprise which provides inclusive physical activity sessions for those who face barriers to participation. The award winning programme arrived in Colchester in March 2019 and is currently delivering 5 sessions per week, offering Boccia, football, swimming, seated exercise and multisports.
Cllr Theresa Higgins, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Commercial Services, says: “Since its launch in January 2019, Sport For Confidence has been incredibly well received at Leisure World Colchester. I’m pleased to see the programme develop with this partnership with See and Stretch Book Club, which builds on the great work that is already happening in Colchester to engage individuals most in need and who will really prosper from the many social, mental and physical benefits sport and physical activity delivers.”
