Since the programme launched at Basildon Sporting Village in 2016 it has gone from strength to strength. Today, the programme welcomes more than 250 swimmers every month, at 9 leisure venues across Essex and London. For most swimmers, Swim For Confidence creates an opportunity for them to enter the water at a public facility for the first time in their lives.
Many leisure centres offer facilities, such as pool pods and hydraulic floors, to enable physical access to the water. However, for many people, physically getting in and out of the water is not the primary barrier”, explains Jake Turner, Operations Manager.
“Our programme offers the personal support of a coach and allied health professional to help more people enjoy the many physical, mental and social benefits of time in the water. The sessions have been designed to support anybody who appreciates a little extra support when in the water, from dementia sufferers to those with learning disabilities or mobility issues. For most individuals, support means either physical help entering and leaving the pool, a hand to hold in the water, maintenance of a quiet, calm environment or simply a presence to reassure them that somebody is aware of their needs and is looking out for them.”
Jake, continues: “The programme also encourages carers and family members to enter the water, creating a bonding and social experience for all, enhancing fun and enjoyment.”
In 2018, Swim For Confidence was announced winner of the national David Sparks OBE Innovation Award by Swim England.
