Sport For Confidence has received funding from Active Essex to launch ‘Step Forward’, a pilot project for Year 6 children to explore whether physical activity helps them become more confident as they prepare to transition from primary to secondary school.

Unfortunately, due to the impact of Covid-19, a high percentage of children have been unable to attend school during the summer term. This means, many Year 6 children have missed out on the in-school support traditionally provided to ease the transition from primary to secondary school.

The pilot project aims to support the gap and help children across 6 areas in Essex prepare for the big change ahead.

Sport for Confidence Occupational Therapist Hannah Webster said: “Each session, delivered by Zoom and designed by an occupational therapist, will include a discussion around a relevant topic and a physical activity led by a Sport For Confidence sports coach. Discussions will centre on: How to achieve occupational balance, building resilience, developing social skills and friendships, managing stress and anxiety plus coping with set backs.

This vital programme has been funded through Active Essex via Sport England’s Satellite Club investment fund. Jim Messenger, Active Essex lead on Satellite Clubs said: “Transitioning from primary to secondary school, for some young people, can be challenging. We are pleased to be working with Sport for Confidence to explore how physical activity can help young people become more confident in participating in future activities.”

Sport for Confidence and Active Essex have worked with 6 primary schools across the county to identify children who will most benefit from this initiative. The programme will run for 6 sessions during the summer holidays and, during October half term, those involved will be invited to attend a group session at a leisure centre so everyone can meet in person, de-brief and consolidate learning.
