Sport For Confidence Model Launches at Harrow Lodge Leisure Centre

INCLUSIVE SPORTS PROGRAMME SETTLES INTO ITS NEW HOME AT HARROW LODGE

Sport For Confidence CIC, the award winning, multi sports programme for individuals who face barriers to participation, has anounced a new timetable of activities at Harrow Lodge Leisure Centre starting May 12, 2021.

“The new Harrow Lodge Leisure Centre has been designed to accommodate a wide segment of the community, including those with mental and physical disabilities which makes it the perfect home for our inclusive sports programme”, says Vera Loughnane , Occupational Therapist at Sport For Confidence.

Vera continues: “To launch our programme we will be offering a number of activities including Boccia, multi sports, dance and fun fitness. Each session is run by Taylor O’Neill, sports coach and an occupational therapist with the emphasis on fun and inclusion rather than performance and competition.”

Sport for Confidence launched services at Hornchurch Sports Centre in January 2020 but a series of enforced facility closures to help control the spread of Covid-19, meant that the programme never had the chance to get established.

Vera adds: “Now that the vaccine programme is rolling out and leisure facilities have been given the greenlight to re-open we are really excited to welcome people back and show off our new home. Whilst we will need to continue to respect and manage enhanced hygiene and social distancing rules for some time, the opportunity to socialise and be active will have a hugely positive impact on our participants, many of whom will have been isolating alone for many months, with very limited contact to the outside world.”

Vera adds: “This centre has been built with accessibility at its core, creating sporting opportunities for everyone. Whilst swimming is currently not part of the Sport For Confidence programme, it is worth noting that the main swimming pool offers variable depth via an adjustable floor plus a wheelchair pod. A chair hoist also provides easy access to both the main and the training pools. The changing village also offers accessible changing rooms and toilets plus there is a fully approved Changing Places facility. A wheelchair lift is available too for free mobility between floors and all access routes have been designed to accommodate wheelchair use.

Garry Firth, General Manager at Everyone Active, the sport and leisure operator commissioned to manage Harrow Lodge Leisure Centre in partnership with Havering Council, says: ““The brand new Harrow Lodge Leisure Centre is a welcome addition to Hornchurch and the local community will benefit greatly from all the fantastic facilities we have to offer.

“The leisure centres in Havering are pivotal in providing a wide range of facilities to the community and we’re passionate about helping more people to improve their health and wellbeing by getting active.”
