Our Occupational Therapist, Megan Potts, has been commissioned by Active Essex to help women and children in the Southend, Safe Steps refuge to keep active this summer.

In addition to providing advice on the purchase of outdoor equipment to help children develop motor skills and proprioception, Megan has compiled a resource pack full of activities and challenges that parents can get involved in with their children. Megan will also be working with residents to deliver bespoke physical activity sessions for adults via an online platform. Activity types will be selected by residents and could include anything from seated exercise to dance and from relaxation techniques to anxiety management.

Megan says: “Physical activity is a great way to bring families and communities together. Using physical activity as an assessment and intervention tool for Occupational Therapy practice, we can deliver an array of outcomes that positively influence daily life such as; improved self-confidence, enhanced communication skills, better self-awareness, reduced anxiety, improved coping mechanisms and a more positive outlook. Physical activity provides the perfect setting to bring families and communities together, enhancing the support network available to some of the most vulnerable people in our society.”
