Meet The NED's - Ben Beevers
Posted on 27th November 2024 at 11:27
Continuining our blog series where we get to know our Board of Directors a little better – the wealth of skillsets, insight and experience they bring and why they wanted to be a Sport for Confidence NED!
This time we are getting to know Ben Beevers, who is one of 4 fantastic new talents who joined our Board in September 2024. Ben has worked in the leisure, health and fitness industry for over 30 years, starting as a lifeguard and progressing to the position of Group Development Director for Everyone Active, one of the UK’s largest and most reputable leisure operators. During that time, Ben has built vast knowledge of the leisure sector and understanding of its unique challenges.
Ben is passionate about activity and the benefits it can bring to everyone. On a personal level activity played a key role in Ben's recovery from cancer and he remains active, regularly playing a number of sports and undertaking endurance events.
Hello and welcome, Ben!
• How did you first hear about Sport for Confidence?
'It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment, but I had a meeting at Basildon Sporting Village and by chance saw firsthand the incredible work happening there. I spoke with Lyndsey, who shared her inspiring story behind the creation of Sport for Confidence, and soon after, Sport for Confidence received a UK Active award, a well-deserved recognition for their transformative impact on the lives of people living with disability and long term health conditions.'
• What made you want to be a Non Executive Director for Sport for Confidence?
'I’ve witnessed the incredible impact Sport for Confidence has on the communities they serve (see their independent evaluation report: £58 social value per £1 spent!). Unlike short-term projects, Sport for Confidence offers a sustainable model with the potential to scale across the UK, supporting communities and making a real lasting difference in people’s lives. Seeing all this, I wanted to play a part in its growth, helping bring positive change.'
• What do you think you can bring to the SFC Board room?
'Over the past 15 years with Everyone Active, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to our growth from 39 sites to nearly 250. Now, I’m excited to bring that experience to support Sport for Confidence’s vision of placing an Occupational Therapist in every leisure centre across the country.'
• If you had to choose just one - book, film, and food - to take with you to a desert island, what would they be?
'If we’re skipping the survival guides - Book: Lord of the Rings, Film: Shawshank Redemption, and Food: Fresh Bread (with butter if allowed).'
Butter is always allowed, Ben!
