Today, Sport For Confidence employs three sports coaches who have come through the Coach Core Apprenticeship scheme. One of them is Fanuel Chivasa. Here is his story.
Fanuel has always enjoyed an active lifestyle and knew from a young age that he wanted to help others to get the same pleasure and sense of achievement from sport that he, himself enjoys. When he left school, he considered university but when an opportunity to join the Coach Core Apprenticeship Scheme was presented to him it made total sense.
Fanuel, says: “The apprenticeship provided the perfect blend of practical, on the job, experience and classroom learning. I loved the fact that I was immediately thrown into situations where I had to think on my feet and use my initiative in a live environment. During the apprenticeship, I helped to deliver adapted sport and physical activity sessions to people with a range of conditions from dementia and alzheimers to learning disabilities and Down Syndrome.”
In November 2018, Fanuel completed his apprenticeship and is now employed as a part-time sports coach by Sport For Confidence, delivering a variety of inclusive sport sessions at Witham Leisure Centre in Essex.
Fanuel, adds: “I love my job. The best part is watching participants develop and thrive as a result of my support and guidance. There is nothing better than seeing a new participant return for a second and third session after being initially being almost too nervous to walk through the door. Sport has played a huge part in my life and I am now really enjoying being able to create the same opportunities for others.
‘The Coach Core Apprenticeship Scheme and the work experience with Sport For Confidence has given me the skills and self-confidence I needed to get my foot on the career ladder. I would like to continue learning and developing so that I can become even more effective at helping others. My immediate ambition is to gain my Level 3, Personal Training qualification. After that the sky is the limit!
