It’s Award Season and this year Sport For Confidence has collected an incredible 5 awards in the last 6 weeks, for its pioneering programme which creates sporting and physical activity opportunities for individuals who face barriers to participation.
Sport For Confidence is a ground breaking programme which places occupational therapists and other allied health professionals (AHPs) alongside sports coaches in mainstream leisure centres to deliver activity sessions which provide a fully inclusive experience for all participants. Everyone is welcome to get involved and, through engagement with a growing network of local community partners, the programme is particularly successful in attracting individuals form hard to reach groups who are otherwise likely to lead inactive, isolated lifestyles.
Lyndsey Barrett, occupational therapist and Founder of Sport For Confidence, says: “Sport for Confidence began at Basildon Sporting Village in 2015 where I held sessions with just one client. Since then, the programme has expanded massively thanks to the dedication of our team and the support of a huge array of community partners.
“Each month the programme is delivering more than 1,000 interventions, across 5 sites, 4 in Essex and one in Waltham Forest, with further sites in Clacton and Colchester launching in early 2019. Every day, we witness the life changing impact sport and physical activity is having on our participants, benefits which reach far beyond the physical. I am extremely proud of what the team is achieving and the positive influence we are delivering in the communities we serve.”
The award wins include national recognition from Swim England, the National Governing Body (NGB) for swimming in the UK. At the annual awards, Sport For Confidence was announced the winner of the prestigious David Sparkes OBE, Innovation Award for its Swim for Confidence programme. Developed in association with the NGB, Swim For Confidence places swim teachers alongside health professionals creating opportunities for individuals from hard to reach groups access the many physical and mental benefits swimming has to offer.
